Horse Racing Market Movers That Tick All The Boxes

Wednesday 6th February 2013

There have been 4 top-rated winners over the last 2 days:

Aubrietia in the 15:40 at Southwell yesterday (Betfair SP of 6.01)
Winds And Waves in the 15:00 at Market Rasen yesterday (BSP of 5.55)
Gallox Bridge in the 14:30 at Market Rasen yesterday (BSP of 2.96)
Stand Guard in the 14:40 at Southwell yesterday (BSP of 1.57)

6 top-rated selections have placed and 6 races have been won by second or third top-rated selections. To view the overall performance of the top-rated selections, please click here.

Market Movers That Tick All The Boxes

The 7 horses listed below all recorded the highest positive Mov1, Mean & 321 values in their respective races on JustStartHere - the only 7 to do so over the last 2 days:

Le Reve in the 14:00 at Market Rasen yesterday (W)
Bartley in the 14:10 at Southwell yesterday (P)
Unzing in the 14:25 at Fairyhouse yesterday (P)
Smart Money in the 14:55 at Fairyhouse yesterday (W)
Sans Loi in the 15:40 at Southwell yesterday (L)
Helloin the 16:30 at Market Rasen yesterday (W)
Discay in the 16:40 at Southwell yesterday (W)

Out of the 7, 4 went on to win (57%) and 6 went on to place (86%). Backing them all to win would have returned a profit of 13.60 points after commission (based on Betfair SPs) and backing them all to place would have returned a profit of 12.91 points after commission (based on Betfair place SPs).

If a horse ticks all 3 boxes of being the biggest overall (Mov1), average (Mean) & late (321) steamer in a race, it’s definitely worth taking note.

Backing Big Early Horse Racing Steamers To Place

Wednesday 30th January 2013

There have been 7 top-rated winners over the last 2 days:

Backing Big Early Horse Racing Steamers To Place

Not everyone is able to monitor the racing right up until 1 minute before the off for every race. With this in mind, we spent some time investigating the earlier price movements on JustStartHere to see if there were any profitable betting angles to be found.

One pattern jumped out straight away – the biggest stand out 60 minute steamers in 3 out of the opening 4 races on Monday went on to place with big Betfair place odds. By “stand out” we mean green or blue steamers – i.e. horses that have recorded Mov values in excess of +2.5 (green) or +5(blue). The Mov60 values for the biggest “stand out” steamers in the 3 races mentioned are outlined in red on the screenshot below:

Early SteamersClick on image above to enlarge

Using 11am as the morning comparison time on JustStartHere, backing only the biggest green or blue Mov60 steamer in each race to place over the last 2 days would have returned a profit of 43.32 points after commission (based on Betfair place SPs). The full results are listed below:

Date Race Horse 11am Price 60 Min Price Mov60 Value Result Betfair Place SP Returns
28/01 13:40 Wolverhampton Bachelor Knight 36.00 25.00 +3.05 P 3.14

29/01 17:30 Wolverhampton Ace Master 9.00 5.40 +3.99 P 1.52
Total: 43.32

Early days yet, but this approach could well be worth some further investigation – especially for those who prefer to get their bets on a bit earlier than 1 minute before the off. We’ll keep an eye on results over the next few days and look to analyse the historical performance of the system over a longer period of time.

Suspicious Betting Activity – Horse Racing Outsiders

Following on from our observations last Wednesday, another couple of outsiders attracted late money yesterday only to drift back out again just before the off.

The betting exchange odds for Edgware Road in the 17:10 at Wolverhampton came in from 26 to 18.5 between 5 and 3 minutes before post time (see movement value outlined in red on the screenshot below), only to then drift back our again to 25 at 1 minute before the off. This caused it to record a noticeably high negative value of -3.51 on JustStartHere. Always look out for suspicious late betting activity like this – the horse went on to be beaten by a neck (Betfair SP of 29, place SP of 5.92):

Unusual Betting PatternsClick on image above to enlarge

Earlier on, the betting exchange odds for Even Stevens steamed in from 48 to 30 between 15 minutes and 3 minutes before the start of the 13:50 at Lingfield, only to then drift out again (see screenshot below). It recorded the highest negative 321 rating in the race on JustStartHere and went on to be beaten by half a length (Betfair place SP of 7.2).

Unusual Betting PatternsClick on image above to enlarge

Always ask yourself this when monitoring the prices just before post time – if a horse has recorded a high negative 321 value, is it part of a general drifting pattern or is it because lots of late money went on it prior to 3 minutes before the off to make the drift appear artificially large? If it’s the latter, take note!

Top-Rated Cherry Picks Day Of The Week Analysis

Many of you have written in recently asking how the top-rated selections fare on the different days of the week. Seeing as how the weather has played havoc with the racing schedule over the last few days, we thought we’d carry out some analysis. Here are the findings:

Day No. Days No. Winning Days Points Returns
Saturday 93 47 (51%) +182.16
Wednesday 82 37 (40%) +78.41
Tuesday 93 44 (48%) +42.17
Friday 92 39 (42%) +1.94
Sunday 92 36 (44%) -9.75
Monday 92 37 (40%) -57.64
Thursday 93 39 (42%) -151.41
Totals: 637 279 (44%) +85.89
Day Of The Week Analysis

Unsurprisingly then, Saturday comes out on top. The quality of horse racing is generally better on Saturdays and this makes predicting winners a whole lot easier. Thursday is the day to avoid it seems!

If you have any Cherry Picks analysis requests, please don’t hesitate to get in contact (info@cherrybets.com) –  we’d be more than happy to take a look for you if we can.

More Unusual Betting Patterns To Look Out For

Another horse caught my eye on JustStartHere yesterday – one that may surprise you. Miserere Mei recorded a normally off-putting high negative 321 value of -3.33 but that was AFTER the price had steamed in from 25 to 15 between 15 minutes and 3 minutes before post time (the notable price movements are highlighted in red on the screenshot below):

Unusual Betting Patterns
Click on image above to enlarge

The horse drifted massively during the last 3 minutes before the off but this has to be weighed up against the fact that it was gambled on very heavily during the previous 12 minutes or so. Either way, you should always take note when a a big outsider attracts such a flurry of betting activity.

As it turned out, Miserere Mei (Betfair SP of 21.37) came third in a race where the top 3 were separated by 2 necks. It was a close run thing but the Betfair SP place odds were still a generous 5.17. When it comes to backing outsiders in these scenarios, I would always recommend a conservative approach – i.e. backing them each way or to place.

How Do We Personally Use The Price Movement Data Provided By JustStartHere?

I had a bit of time to kill on my lunchbreak today so I logged into my JustStartHere account and had a quick look at the steamers and drifters in the upcoming race (the 13:30 at Lingfield). I noticed that 2 outsiders (Polarity & Big Kahuna) had attracted a bit of money during the last 3 minutes before post time. In fact, they recorded the 2 highest positive 321 values in the race on  JustStartHere (highlighted in red on the screenshot below):

Horse Racing SteamersClick on image above to enlarge

Seeing that the race had 8 runners (meaning 3 place positions), and that the odds were good, I decided to put £2 on each of them to place:

Betfair ScreenClick on image above to enlarge

Polarity duly came third with an enormous Betfair place SP of 65.26 and netted me a profit of £120.19 after commission:

Betfair WinningsClick on image above to enlarge

We receive a lot of emails asking how we personally use the JustStartHere information and this demonstrates our approach perfectly. It is important to be selective and look for value. In this race the 3 favourites were odds-on to place yet the 2 biggest positive 321 ratings on JSH were recorded by 2 outsiders. All it takes is for one of the top 3 in the betting to run a bad race and for one of the 2 outsiders that have been backed during the last 3 minutes before post time to show why they have attracted late money. As it turned out, this is exactly what transpired and a £4 outlay returned a profit of £120.

You don’t have to try and force an angle in every single race – just pick the ones where you think there’s value to be had. Nor do you have to sit and follow a system all day, every day to make use of the data. At just £6 per month the service still provides value for money if you only use it in the evenings, at weekends or whenever you get the chance to follow the racing. Indeed, the profit I made in this race covers a 20 month subscription to the service.

*** JustStartHere Yesterday ***

The JustStartHere site experienced some server issues yesterday morning and this affected the collection of the 11am prices. For future reference, if your preferred morning prices have not come in for whatever reason, you can always change the morning price settings in the “My Account” section of your JustStartHere account. Under “My Display Preferences”, select either 9am, 10am or 11am as the morning comparison time and click “update” to save the changes.

The Mov values and star ratings were affected if you used the 11am prices yesterday but would have been fine had you switched to the 9am or 10am prices. Apologies for the disruption to the service – everything should be back to normal today.

Becoming A Successful Bettor – The Golden Rules

Today we will uncover what we believe to be the most important factors that will contribute to your betting success.

These are the GOLDEN RULES:

Choice

One of the most powerful weapons we hold is choice. The bookmakers and exchanges are committed to offering prices on virtually every single sporting event, but there are undoubtedly events that are more “bookmaker friendly” than others. The professionals will wait until the right opportunity crops up. It is essential to weed out the bets that favour the bookie (such as the ones they advertise), and only bet when we have value on our side. It is essential to understand and accept that we are not going to win all the time – you have to take a long-term view. This is what following the mantra of “value” will enable us to do.

Patience

Leading on from choice is the virtue of patience. One of the biggest problems the novice professional will face in their keenness to make money is forcing bets when they should not. This is a guatanteed way to enter a spiral of losing bets that can rapidly run out of control. It can be frustrating when the opportunities seem few and far between, but you must resist the temptation to bet for the sake of it. If you do you are “gambling” and throwing away the advantage you have over the bookies or fellow Betfair punters.

Good Bank Management

A business-like approach to bank management is always employed by the professionals. You must always be aware of how much of your bank you should be risking in any given scenario and not be tempted to deviate from what you know is statistically correct. As with all businesses, there are running expenses and you must get into the habit of viewing losses and payments to valued services etc. as the essential expenses needed to run your business effectively.

Adopting A Portfolio Approach

All professionals operate a portfolio of betting methods designed to compliment and support each other. The nature of the game means that even proven systems over time will have winning and losing streaks. A diverse portfolio ensures that the likelihood of a system going through a losing streak is balanced by the likelihood of another system experiencing a winning streak. As long as the systems used are proven over time, the end result will always be an increasing bank.

Can You Make A Good Living From Betting?

Success as a betting professional requires a lot of endeavour and a long term approach – it is not an easy career path to follow. There will be many sleepless nights and much disenchantment along the way. The goal of betting for a living is achievable provided you have an interest in betting, understand betting principles, are numerate, determined, and posses the ability to become emotionally detached.

Betting professionals don’t really consider themselves gamblers at all. They like to think that they are on a par with investors playing the stock market – selecting the right opportunities – when to bet and when not to bet.  So operating a safe, reliable and profitable betting business has nothing to do with blind luck or chance; rather, it is the combination of observations, form study, selectivity and intelligent decision-making. Additionally it is important that you thoroughly understand money management and posses the required discipline to bet with only a percentage of your total betting bank. By following such a course, betting professionals will make a living.

Like any self-employed individual, there are advantages and disadvantages in betting for a living. One of the advantages of this career path is that you have the opportunity to build the new business slowly in your spare time without giving up your day job. This approach will enable you to determine if and when the time is right to become a full time professional. As with any new venture it will take time and dedication to succeed – you will not become a ‘betting pro’ overnight. You will need to take time serving your apprenticeship, learning from your mistakes along the way.

Thanks to the proliferation of the online betting exchanges and bookmakers, betting is now a worldwide industry.  This means another advantage of betting for a living is that you can now run your betting business from anywhere in the world and operate with minimal overheads. Finally, betting is a truly recession proof industry with downturns in the economy having no effect on the betting exchange markets – even when money seems to be tight, betting markets are always awash with money.

Controlling Emotion: The Key To Becoming A Successful Bettor

Did you know that controlling emotion is the biggest element of being a successful bettor? Approximately 90% of all bettors fail to achieve this leaving only 10% go on to succeed at betting because they have the right betting mindset.

The psychology behind betting can take time to develop and will result in consistent success, but it has to be worked at, depending on the place you find yourself in emotionally at any given moment in your life.

In order to “fix” psychological issues you must first become aware of the problem and the issues causing them. Take a look at some of the most common issues and honestly answer the following questions:

  • Are you frightened of taking a loss?
  • Do you come out of bets through fear of a winning position reversing and then feeling let down?
  • Do you need instant gratification by chasing losses?
  • Can you take the responsibility for your selections and accept the reality of the event?
  • Are you a compulsive bettor, drawn to the excitement of the meetings?
  • Do you have unrealistic expectations and feel anger after losing a bet?
  • Do you limit your profits as you may have low self esteem and feel you don’t deserve to be a winner?
  • Do you always follow your proven betting system as you may not trust in your ability to choose a successful one?
  • Do you overthink your bet, second guessing your betting signals?
  • Do you bet too much through greed?
  • Do you feel irritable after the betting day due to anger, fear or greed?
  • Do you bet with money you cannot afford to lose or bet with borrowed money?

How many of these issues may have referred to you? Have you answered the questions honestly? It would be a good idea to keep a list of your possible failings within view it at all times during your betting day and this will ensure you do not fall into one or more of your psychological traps.

These are by no means all the psychological issues, but are the most common. They usually centre on the fact that the bettor is not following their chosen betting approach or system and prefers to wing it or gamble emotionally.

Your goal as a bettor is to maintain an even keel so that you are not emotionally affected by winning and losing bets. Reach this equilibrium and you are on the road to success! Combine this state of mind with a successful betting strategy such as those offered by Cherry Bets and there’ll be no stopping you!

Betting Psychology, Money Management & Betting Strategies

THE GOLDEN RULES

Before anyone even dreams of becoming a successful bettor, they should take note of  four golden rules:

1) Bet only as much as you can afford to lose

2) Gambling is a marathon and not a sprint

3) Never chase your losses once you hit a losing streak

4) Always remember rules 1, 2 and 3!

BETTING PSYCHOLOGY

Many punters with a very good strike rate fail to show any kind of profit due to very poor money management and betting psychology.

Gambling ought to be thought of as an investment where money is ultimately earned from initial capital outlay. Good investors know how to protect their capital and not throw it away on a hunch. Betting should be approached in the same way.

One of the best ways to protect capital is to monitor results over a period of time, ideally for a whole season of the sport you like to bet on. You should then be able to calculate your strike rate and the average odds. From then onwards you can proceed to subdivide your strike rate according to the different odds.

You should now be able to calculate your LLR (Longest Losing Streak), your LWR (Longest Winning Streak), and the yield you accomplished in the different odds.

Once you have gathered and monitored your results, you can identify and remove any bets that caused you a negative yield and loss of capital, and then you can see what method of staking suits you best or improves your profitability.

Now you are becoming a more refined bettor and assuming a mathematical/professional approach. What you are doing is following a simple investing rule by minimizing your losses and maximizing your profits. Consider your gambling as your own home business – try to achieve the maximum profit you can with minimum risk to your initial investment.

You must be aware that there is just as much chance of winning as there is of losing. DO NOT GET DISAPPOINTED if you hit a losing streak and DON’T GIVE UP. It is bound to happen and you should be prepared for it.
